The title of an article by Nancy Shepherd asks, "Are you a potential potbellied pig parent?"

Well are you?  This section of the Information Center will help you explore the ins and outs of adopting a potbellied pig and help you determine if the having a 4-year old child run around your house for 20 years or so is something you really want.

Take your time.  Adopting a potbellied pig is a huge commitment.  You need to do your homework and learn  about the nature of pigs and your responsibilities as a pet pig owner.  You will probably need to educate the veterinarian in your area if you cannot locate one who has experience with potbellied pigs.

  • Explore the origins and standards of adopt a  healthy potbellied pig so you can adopt one that will be a welcome, cheerful addition to your family.
  • Carefully consider the pros & cons of being a potbellied pig parent and ask yourself if you can abide by a code of ethics in the adoption process and caring for your pig in the years to come.
  • Adopting a potbellied pig on a whim is a very bad idea.   Check out the Dos and Don'ts before you go out and adopt.
  • Read more.  There are several excellent books available to assist you in your educational process.  They are listed in the bibliography section of this section of the Information Center.
