Dos - Don'ts
Up

Important Dos

  • Supervise new pet pigs around other pigs and animals, particularly animals that are predatory and especially curious. Potbellied pigs can feel threatened by dogs that sniff them. Animal with a predatory nature may attack a pig if it squeals.

Important Don'ts

  • Force social situation. Acclimate your pet pig to strangers and small groups. Slowly, your pig can be introduced to larger groups. If your pig is not properly socialized, a large party or group can be frightening and confusing. This confusion can result in inappropriate behavior.
  • Force familiarity on a new pet. For the first week you have a new pet pig, provide him or her with a safe, quiet place to rest. Encourage your pig to come to you when he or she is comfortable. Allow him or her to become comfortable at his own speed.
