Entropion is evidenced by an inverted eyelid that results in one or more eyelashes rubbing against the cornea and conjunctiva. The result is varying degrees of discomfort and irritation. The condition is genetic; so when it is confirmed, the affected pig should not be used for breeding. The condition can be rectified by surgical removal of some of the skin of the eyelid. If no action is taken, not only will the pig suffer greatly but also more permanent eye damage may result.

Not all instances of apparent entropion are the "real thing." There are numerous other ways in which a look-alike condition can result in similar clinical signs. For example, a slightly swollen eyelid, a misdirected cilia, a foreign body in the eye, or even sunburn, will create a change in the eyelid that might direct the lashes onto the eye. Potbellied pigs also have varying degrees of skin wrinkles around the eye, and these too can cause similar problems. If your pet displays signs of eye irritation, do not simply apply eye lotions. Let your vet examine porky so a correct diagnosis can be made.
