Rabies
Up

According to "Veterinary Care of Pot-Bellied Pigs" by Lorrie Boldrick, D.V.M.:
"Rabies can occur in pigs, but there is no vaccine approved for use in the porcine species." (page 25)

"Pseudorabies, or Aujeszky's Diease, is of great importance in the United States. The USDA routinely tests hogs belonging to large breeders and all pigs that are moved interstate. Pigs which test positive are quarrantined and are only allowed to leave the quarantine area after they are butchered. Some herds, both commercial and Pot-Bellied, are tested quarterly and certified free of the disease.

Pseudorabies is cased bu Pseudorabie virus (PRV), a type of herpes virus. There is a vaccine available. Certain states, however, do not allow the use of the vaccine. The vaccine can cause a positive reading on some PRV tests, so it is extremely important not to use it unless it is approved in your state.

PRV can cause fatalities in very young piglets, but the disease is far less serious in older pigs. PRV will NOT affect humans, but can cause fatal disease in other domestic animals. Severe pruritus is the primary sign in these other species." (pg 25-26).
